MySpace launched a new and improved MySpace Music Player today with the focus on music discovery and sharing enabling users to access what the company calls the world’s largest library of music online. This is the first major update to the service since the site has been bought by Specific Media in June this year.
Google announced several new Google+ features this morning which will be rolling out over the next couple of days. The most significant improvement to the search giant’s social network is the addition of “fine-grained controls” which will allow users to adjust the volume of updates they receive from circles and friends in their main stream.
Google+ has introduced Pages for businesses and brands, a feature that organizations have been expecting to see since the social network’s initial launch. Google+ Pages allow brands and businesses to create a presence on Google+ and connect with their customers and fans online.
Google+ opened to the public last week with slew of new features. Since then, Google’s social network experienced significant growth, both in terms of traffic and user base.
According to a market research company Experian Hitwise, Google+ market share of visits increased by 1,269% last week, receiving 15 million US visits, mobile traffic excluded. Google+ climbed on the 8th spot in Experian Hitwise’s list of most visited social networking sites last week, up from 54th spot it held previously.
Facebook announced Monday it will offer up to $10 million in free Facebook advertising to US small businesses in cooperation with the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The company says that the goal of the initiative is to “invest, educate, and connect” with small businesses across the States.
Starting in January 2012, Facebook will give businesses up to $10 million in free Facebook ads with the goal to award 200,000 US small businesses with a $50 boost.
Google+ announced a new feature Monday allowing its users to share their circles with friends. Anyone who wishes to share the content of their circles can now do so on Google+ Circles page by clicking on a Share button. Users can then choose a person they want to share their circle with and can also add a comment to follow.
Google points out that by sharing a circle, users only share the members of that circle but the name of the circle remains private. Changes you make to a circle after sharing are private as well. When your friends receive the circle you shared with them, they can choose who they want to add to their own circles.
Twitter has acquired social information analysis company Julpan. The startup announced the acquisition Wednesday on its blog, but the terms of the deal were not disclosed. Julpan was founded in 2010 and focuses on analyzing the way people share information on the social web , including status updates, Tweets, Facebook likes, and rss feeds aiming to deliver the most relevant content to users.
Julpan analyzes the activity of more than a 100 million people to determine the most relevant and important stories in real-time, as they appear on the Web, the company says.
Three months after releasing an invite-only version of Google+, Google has finally opened its social network to the public. The search giant also announced several important upgrades to its social project, adding to the 91 improvements that have already been made to Google+ since it has been launched.
One feature that users of Google+ have been waiting on impatiently is Search. Now Google has leveraged its mastery in the field to bring search to Google+ and allow users to search for people, posts, and web content easily by typing their queries in the search box.
93% of Facebook users click the “Like” button at least monthly, but the meaning behind “Like” varies considerably by age and context, according to an ExactTarget study. The interactive marketing company found the most common uses of “Like” related to posts made by friends, followed by clicking the “Like” button on sites outside of Facebook as a form of ‘social bookmarking.’
“With Facebook such a vital part of the online social fabric, marketers need to be smart and strategic when developing campaigns on Facebook,” Jeff Rohrs, Vice President, ExactTarget’s Marketing Research and Education Group said in a statement.
